Sakamoto was an electronic music pioneer who, along with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, established the Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). On his 71st birthday in January, he released a new album entitled “12,” explaining that writing had a “little therapeutic effect on my broken body and psyche.” For his work on “The Last Emperor” in 1987, Sakamoto won both an Oscar Award and a Grammy.

He is best known for his contributions to cinema scores, though he did help create the electronic group Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978. In 1987, he took home both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his work on the score of “The Last Emperor.” In addition to “Femme Fatale,” “Snake Eyes,” and “The Revenant,” he composed music for several other films.
