On his 71st birthday in January, he released a new album entitled “12,” explaining that writing had a “little therapeutic effect on my broken body and psyche.” For his work on “The Last Emperor” in 1987, Sakamoto won both an Oscar Award and a Grammy.

After starting cancer treatment in June 2020, Sakamoto has not stopped making new music in his home studio. In his final days, Sakamoto surrounded himself with music, according to the statement.

How Did Sakamoto Die?

After being diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer in June 2014, Ryuichi Sakamoto took a leave of absence that would last for an entire year. In 2015, he reported feeling substantially better, but he worried that his low immunity from radiation treatment made him vulnerable to new tumors.

Sakamoto announced in January 2021 that he had been diagnosed with rectal cancer, but that he still wanted to make music. On March 28, 2023, at the age of 71, Sakamoto tragically lost his battle with cancer. On April 2nd, after his burial had already taken place, news of his death was released.

Born in Tokyo in 1952, Ryuichi Sakamoto was raised on a diet of The Beatles and classical composers like Bach. He is best known for his contributions to cinema scores, though he did help create the electronic group Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978. He co-starred with David Bowie in the 1983 film “Happy Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” for which he also composed the film’s score.

In 1987, he took home both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his work on the score of “The Last Emperor.” In addition to “Femme Fatale,” “Snake Eyes,” and “The Revenant,” he composed music for several other films. When doctors discovered cancer in his mouth and throat in June 2014, he began his fight to survive. He stopped making music for a year as a result of this.
