Many of her fans and professional peers were shaken by the unexpected news of her passing. During the airing of her show, Chubbuck took her own life after giving it a lot of thought.
That morning, she displayed unusual behavior, telling her coworkers that she needed to read a newscast despite never having done so before.
She discussed many news items during the show before claiming “exclusive coverage” of a suicide attempt. She pulled out a handgun and shot herself in the head, just behind the right ear.
What followed Chubbuck’s suicide was a period of confusion and anarchy. Viewers contacted the police and the station, respectively, to inquire whether or not the incident had been faked.
After fourteen hours in critical care, the reporter was pronounced dead at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. It became out that Chubbuck had scripted the entirety of her show, down to the shooting and directions for how her health should be reported.

American news anchor Chubbuck was born in Hudson, Ohio on August 24, 1944. Margaretha D. Chubbuck was the daughter of George Fairbanks Chubbuck. There were two Chubbuck brothers in her family: Greg and Tim.
Christine went to the all-girls Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. She went on to get a degree in theater at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Later, in 1965, she graduated from Boston University with a degree in broadcasting, having first attended Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Christine pursued a career in journalism after finishing her formal schooling. She had a career in television that spanned various networks before she settled at WXLT-TV in Sarasota, Florida, where she remained until her untimely death in 1974.
Christine was quite close to her family, and she lived in the Siesta Key cottage she shared with them for many years before she passed away.
Her mother and Greg, her younger brother, moved in with her after their parent’s divorce. Tim, her older brother, was a frequent houseguest.
