During the Iran-Contra investigation, the blogger was an assistant attorney for the Department of Justice. After the publication of his first novels in the 1990s, he gave up government work and law practice to devote himself full-time to writing. His tenure at The New Yorker was from 1993 till 2020.

Ross has written multiple books, covering topics such as his time in the SLA, the O. J. Simpson murder case, the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, and the kidnapping of Patty Hearst in the 1970s. After the first two were adapted into seasons of American Crime Story on FX, The Simpson Case premiered in 2016.

Toobin was let go from The New Yorker on October 19, 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 epidemic, when he self-stimulated on camera during a Zoom video call between staff members of The New Yorker and WNYC radio.

CNN reports that the writer “has asked for some time off while he deals with a personal issue, which we have granted.” The lawyer issued a statement saying, “I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera,” implying that the incident occurred by accident.

To my wife, kids, extended family, and friends, I am very sorry. He was fired from The New Yorker in November 2020 following an internal review conducted by the magazine’s parent company, Condé Nast. The parent company of WNYC, New York Public Radio, banned him from ever appearing on its shows or podcasts.

After the incident, he was ridiculed by a wide variety of people, including O.J. Simpson, Jimmy Fallon, Donald Trump Jr., and the cast of Saturday Night Live.

Former editor Tina Brown spoke in the magazine’s defense, saying, “27 years of superb reporting and commitment to The New Yorker should have been weighed against an incident that horribly embarrassed the magazine but mostly embarrassed him.”

On June 10, 2021, Ross came back to CNN as their chief legal pundit. He admitted that there was no excuse for his actions and instead termed them “deeply moronic and indefensible,” adding that he “didn’t think other people could see [him].”

The attorney said he tried to “be a better person” by going to therapy and volunteering at a food bank while he wasn’t on TV, as well as writing a book about the Oklahoma City bombing.
