The mother, an African-American woman, passed away the day after giving birth to her 12th child, Nathaniel, through C-section at Harper University Hospital.
The loss of her daughter in December has left the grandmother, Patricia Pouncey, devastated. Her heartache over her daughter’s loss is compounded by her inability to piece together what led up to her passing.
Because Nikita’s husband was in jail, Pouncey’s daughter had to travel to the hospital without him. Since she stayed home to tend to her other grandchildren, she feels bad that she missed out on visiting her daughter in the hospital.
Who Was Nikita Washington Detroit?
Nikita Washington, a Detroit mother who was giving birth to her 12th child when she tragically passed away last year. On December 22, Washington gave birth to her 12th child, a son named Nathaniel, at Detroit’s Hutzel Hospital.
Daveia Knox, her sister, visited the hospital the next day to meet the newborn but had no idea that her sister was experiencing difficulties.
Nikita’s blood oxygen level had decreased, and she needed emergency surgery and a ventilator to stop the bleeding in her abdomen.
She had a postpartum hemorrhage and complications from several C-sections, and despite her family’s pleading, she passed away at 11:55 a.m.
The family is concerned that the hospital may not have done all possible to preserve Washington because they have not heard from the facility.
Washington’s 12 children were orphaned after her death. Her mother, sisters, and other relatives have nonetheless stepped up to provide for them.
Nikita’s older children’s father has passed away, while the younger ones’ father is currently serving time in prison. If the kids didn’t have family in Michigan, they would have been fostered.
Patricia is raising her grandchildren on faith and is thankful to the donors who made it possible for them to get a new house and a reliable car.
She hopes that her daughter will be remembered as a warm and giving person who found joy in hairstyling, music, and time spent with loved ones.

According to her obituary, Nikita Washington passed died in Eastpointe, Michigan, on December 23, 2022. On October 19th, 1987, she was born to two caring adults.
On January 9, 2023, at 1:00 PM, family and friends gathered at Q A Cantrell Funeral Services LLC. in Eastpointe to say goodbye to Nikita.
Harper University Hospital, which is part of the Detroit Medical Center, has remained silent about her passing out of respect for her family’s privacy. Only condolences were extended to the family.
The woman who is now responsible for Nikita’s 12 children, Patricia Pouncey, encourages family members to be strong advocates for their pregnant or giving birth to loved ones.
Pouncey stresses the importance of questioning medical practitioners and seeking explanations in layman’s terms. The newest numbers from the National Center for Health Statistics show that the death rate for Black women is 2.6% higher than it is for White women.
Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) features events all throughout the country to raise awareness about this problem. Irth is supporting a five-city tour and offering reviews written by Black and brown women of maternity care facilities.
