When she was only 11 years old, her mother passed away. Her southern grandparents took her in after the death of her parents and raised her. The politician’s grandma passed away when she was only 16, another tragic loss in her young life.

Because of this, she was raised solely by her grandfather, a handicapped Navy veteran. She faced many obstacles along the way, but she never gave up, and she eventually became a prominent political figure.

After winning a high school public-speaking contest organized by Councilwoman Augusta Clark, she decided to pursue a career in politics.

As a result of her success, she was able to give her statement in front of the City Council and get both monetary compensation and a vacation to Africa.

She also worked as an intern for Philadelphia City Councilwoman Marian Tasco while she was in high school. She decided to continue her education past high school and wound up getting her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Lincoln University and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively.

Before entering politics, the woman worked as a high school English teacher. She began working in Mayor Marian Tasco’s office in 1995 and held a number of different positions there over the course of the next decade.
