He was born on November 21, 1943, in Salem, Oregon, and began his professional rodeo career when he was just 14 years old. In the 1970s, Mahan competed on the circuit of the Rodeo Cowboys Association, which in 1975 changed its name to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
From 1966 to 1970 and again in 1973, he was crowned World All-Around Champion five times in a row. The Great American Cowboy, a documentary about his comeback in 1973 and his competition with Phil Lyne, won the Academy Award for Documentary Feature in 1974.
The Rodeo Cowboy was an accomplished rider in three disciplines: the saddle bronc, the bareback, and the bull. Mahan made history by competing in three NFR events in the same calendar year.
