After a driver taking part in an illegal street takeover in Compton struck a man and his fiancée, killing the man and severely injuring the woman, the two families want justice.
The family is looking for redress today. They said the 21-year-old driver who hit the couple had been arrested several times before being let go each time.
The driver has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, but the victims’ loved ones feel that this is not enough punishment.

The incident was recorded on February surveillance cameras. The suspect hit Maria Rivas-Cruz and Raymond Olivares as they crossed Avalon Boulevard.
Authorities said that in late December, Raymond Olivares, 27, and Maria Rivas Cruz, 27, were strolling together when a man fleeing a nearby street takeover ran them down. After the incident, Rivas Cruz took some time to heal.
In his 1996 GMC Jimmy, Olivares collided head-on with a Toyota Tacoma when he accidentally crossed into the southbound lanes. The death of Olivares, who suffered many blows to the head, was ruled an accident.
According to locals, these incidents are the product of a “culture of disrespectful and unsafe vehicles” that regularly wreaks havoc on Compton’s roads. Olivares’s neighbors have reported calling the police numerous times.

Family Mourns the Loss of Raymond Olivares
The Olivares family has made it their mission to put an end to distractions and get things moving faster. They have been distributing brochures and talking to neighbors about how important it is to them that the city takes action before another family loses a son.
The family claims that numerous more takeovers of local streets have occurred and that many of these events are routinely documented online. Enamorado claims that footage of her brother’s corpse was widely circulated online.
The crowd “didn’t care” and “had the nerve to video them as they were lying out on the street and publish it online,” she said, explaining why they were trying to stop them.
